This unit explores the ethical, legal and social policy frameworks that underpin social work and human services organisations and practices in Australia. Students will critically engage with key legal concepts and processes, AASW professional codes of ethics, and regulatory requirements, including mandatory reporting, confidentiality, duty of care, and informed consent. The unit examines the connections between social issues, ethical dilemmas and social policy as they arise in social work and human services. Learning activities will encourage students to apply ethical decision-making models in complex collective practice scenarios. Through case studies, policy analysis, and reflective practice, students will develop skills in ethical reasoning, legal compliance, and culturally responsive practice. Emphasis is placed on contemporary legal and human rights considerations affecting vulnerable populations.
